Newsletter – October 2020

From the Commander

Congratulation’s to our District 8 making All-American during the 2019-2020 year. The VFW turned 120 years old on the 29th of September and on August 6th of 2023 our VFW post will celebrate 100 years!

We will be hosting a District 8 event “Stuff the Bus” at our VFW on the 24th of this month from 1:00 until 3:00, please support this great event which provides warming items to the homeless population during the cold months, and they focus on Veterans. Items that are needed are what they are calling the big five, Coats adult L-4XL, Boots men’s 9-13, sleeping bags, hats (winter) and gloves, and anything else you may want to donate will be greatly appreciated to include a cash donation.

Our post will not be having a Halloween Party this year but we are having a COVID-19 mask contest along with wearing a costume but no costume required and we will have available food specials.

I want to thank everyone who helped out with this summer Cruise-in that we had at our Post with a special thanks to Brent Valentine, Bob and Peggy Clark, Keith Vanbuskirk and John Stanfield for your help in making this event a great time. We added some new members from this event and I hope with less restrictions next year we will have even more people attend this event. And I thank everyone who brought their vehicles to our club.

We have our new state of the art security system in place so everyone who made this happen with supporting our weekly 50/50 I really appreciate your support and this makes your post safer. Our next fundraiser is going to be for a new beverage cooler.

We are still collecting school supplies and if you have any questions about this get with any of our post Auxiliary members and they will let you know what is needed.

From the Auxiliary

It’s October already?! The Auxiliary wishes you all a boo-tiful fall.

Things in the Auxiliary are chugging along. At our September meeting, the District 8 senior vice president, Lynn Karl, visited us and conducted our annual inspection and audit. It’s not surprising that she was impressed with us and gave us great feedback while informing us that we passed! She enjoyed her time with us so much that she wants to come back next year when she is District 8 president.

In her inspection paperwork, SVP Karl stated that we are a fundraising machine! That means we keep putting up new Lottery Boards. Our intrepid treasurer, Joyce Hickman, has been making sure that a new board is prepped as soon as a drawing is held. If you want a ticket, check with an Auxiliary member.

At our September meeting we also discussed the ongoing School Supply Drive. It was determined that we will take all of the donations, along with items the Auxiliary will purchase, and distribute them to Preston Elementary and Woodridge Elementary schools following our October meeting. If you want to donate, there is still time since our meeting will not be until the 19th. We know that the schools truly appreciate anything you can give.

We voted in another new member! We continue to grow and, as always, look forward to meeting everyone who joins. If you have been a member for awhile, please join us at an upcoming meeting to get reacquainted with the Auxiliary.

On Saturday, October 24, 2020, the District will have a bus here for a great event. Stuff the Bus will be an event that collects cold-weather clothing for military veterans in need. The items that they are requesting are for both women and men:

  • Coats, especially Large – 4XL
  • Boots – All Women’s sizes w/a need for sizes 8-9 and All Men’s sizes w/a need for sizes 9-13
  • Sleeping bags
  • Hats
  • Gloves

Sadly, during our meeting we had to hold a Draping of the Charter ceremony for our member Mike Yurich. He passed away in August and we all send our condolences to his family and friends.

Reminder: our monthly meeting for October will be on the 19th at 7:00pm at the Post. We hope to see you there!
