Newsletter – September 2020

From the Commander

It’s September already and I really enjoyed the hot weather we hand this Summer, I’m only disappointed that all of our events that were planned had to be canceled because of the pandemic. Just a reminder that the Labor Day Parade that was supposed to take place for the Parade for Memorial Day that didn’t happen is also canceled. Hopefully next year everything will get back to normal. It has been a heck of a year.

Our Post did another Cruise-in for car/motorcycles on August 29th, it wasn’t as good of a turnout as we were hoping for, but then again because of the pandemic and the weather, I believe it kept allot of people away. We will have one more on September 26th from Noon to 6pm. We have hot dogs and hamburgers for sale and of course our bar is open. Even if you don’t have a car or motorcycle come out and support the Post. It is a good reason to get out of the house.

District 8 will be using our parking lot for an event that is called VFW District 8 Selfless Service: Stuff the Bus day on October 24th, from 1:00-3:00. This event will benefit the Youngstown Blue Coats. They are a non-profit organization that provides warming items to the homeless population during the cold months, but they focus on Veterans. They also provide additional resources and information to Veterans to get them other kinds of help that they may require. Their coverage area extends throughout our entire District, with an annual trip to Pittsburgh, and I hope we can give them support in this very important event.

I want to thank everyone who has been supporting our weekly 50/50 drawing we do on Sundays. The money the Post makes on the 50/50 goes towards items needed for the Post. Currently we are working towards a new security system, which we are very close to being able to purchase. Once that is done, we will start saving for a new ice machine and a beverage cooler for the Dining Hall.

Our Post Monthly drawing is on Saturday the 5th at 7pm. Because of the early closure, we are starting our Karaoke at 6:15 and ending at 10:15. Our kitchen is also open until 9:30 on Saturdays.

I hope everyone is doing well. And don’t forget to check on your family and friends who are not able to get out because of the Pandemic.

Also, Cub Scout Pack 3152 from the First United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls will have drive up popcorn sales on the following dates and times:

  • Sat 9/26 11a-5p
  • Sat 10/3 12p-4p
  • Sat 10/17 12p-4p

From the Auxiliary

It’s time for yet another season change already. In the Auxiliary, we’re just getting our new year going! As we wrap up our first quarter of the 2020-2021 year we have so much going on and still lots more to do!

As you may already know, the start of the school year looks a little different this year. Still, as with every year, the Auxiliary is still collecting school supplies for both Preston and Woodridge elementary schools. Thanks to those who have already donated. If you haven’t yet but would still like to, we are leaving the School Bus basket out a little longer this year so you’ve still got a few weeks. Thanks for the support that you all give. We truly appreciate it.

At our August meeting we voted in three new members! We are excited to welcome them. Speaking of new members, as you know new member applications are available at the Canteen. If you need an application but are staying home you can print an application from the national Auxiliary website, https://vfwauxiliary.org/wp-content/uploads/FILLABLE-Member-Change-Update-Form-REVISED-8.2018.pdf

As we announced a few months ago, the officers of the Auxiliary decided that this year we will be reaching out to all of our members to get their feedback. We really want to find out what our members like about the Auxiliary and what they need. Please keep your eyes out for those communications in the coming weeks and months. We really need your response to make this work. Thank you in advance for assistance.

Thank you to those who have started donating Acme receipts! We appreciate you taking the time to bring them into the Canteen. We will be collecting them through the end of the year.

Our September meeting will take place on Monday, September 21, 2020, at 7:00pm in the hall at the Post. We hope all active members will join us for our meetings this year! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at vfwaux1062@gmail.com
